Japan Symposium – Nagoya Dialogue
On Tuesday 22 October 2024, the Perth USAsia Centre hosted the Nagoya Dialogue in Japan, in partnership with the Western Australian State Government and the University of Western Australia.
Building on the outcomes of the 2024 Japan Symposium in Perth, the Dialogue explored new pathways for Australia-Japan cooperation on energy security, and took place on the sidelines of the Joint Business Conference convened by the Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee (AJBCC) and the Japan-Australia Business Co-operation Committee (JABCC) in Nagoya. The Dialogue brought together 40 attendees from across Australian and Japanese business, government and academic sectors.
As both Canberra and Tokyo work to achieve their net-zero targets, even greater bilateral cooperation on energy will be crucial. The discussion noted the new commercial opportunities that could emerge for related sectors, including extractive industries and advanced manufacturing. And amidst growing tensions across the Indo-Pacific, Australia-Japan cooperation on energy and manufacturing will only continue to grow in importance.
The event in Nagoya included remarks from Elizabeth Cox, the General Manager for Northeast Asia for the Australian Trade and Investment Commission at the Australian embassy in Japan. His Excellency Kusaka Sumio, who served as Japanese Ambassador to Australia between 2015 and 2019, provided keynote remarks. Subsequent expert discussions involved Rebecca Tomkinson, CEO of the Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA; Daein Cha, Managing Director for deepC Store, Director for Transborders Energy and Senior Projects Manager for Future Energy Export CRC; Kirsten Martinus, Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia; Hatakeyama Kyoko, Professor at Niigata University; Tanaka Nobuo, the former Executive Director of the International Energy Agency; and Simone Spencer, Deputy Director General of Strategy and International Engagement at the Western Australian Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation. The event was moderated by Professor Gordon Flake, CEO of the Perth USAsia Centre.
Delivery of the Nagoya Dialogue is supported by the Western Australian State Government through Invest and Trade Western Australia.
