Alongside our regular events program, the Centre’s major events and programs convene leaders and experts to address key regional challenges. These initiatives strengthen Australia’s engagement with the Indo-Pacific through high-level dialogue, strategic collaboration, and diverse perspectives.

Visiting Fellow Program

We’re pleased to welcome Jenny Winata to the Centre for an eight-week visiting fellowship, through an initiative supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.  During her fellowship, Jenny will explore opportunities for the Australia-Indonesia relationship, from the unique vantage point of Western Australia.  Currently Research and Program Manager at the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia in Jakarta, Jenny brings to the Centre expertise on middle power diplomacy, youth engagement and democratic resilience. 

Next Generation Regional Perspectives on the
US-Australia Alliance in the Indo-Pacific

With support from the US State Department the Perth USAsia Centre’s Next Generation Regional Perspectives on the US-Australia Alliance in the Indo-Pacific program brought together five representatives from across the Indo-Pacific region to provide their perspectives from Vietnam, South Korea, India, Indonesia and First Nations Australia.

On Wednesday 22 November 2023, the Perth USAsia Centre marked its 10-year anniversary with a commemorative celebration at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, on the land of the Whadjuk Noongar People.


Japan Symposium

Australia and Japan:
Strategic Partners in Regional Stability

The Perth USAsia Centre, together with the Consul-General of Japan in Perth, hosts the annual Japan Symposium. The event brings together leading experts for a public discussion on issues and opportunities facing Japan and Australia.

Defence and Security Conference

Strategic Horizons:
Defence and Security in the Indian Ocean Region

Held in Perth, these events explore major implications for national defence and regional security, in light of changing geo-economics, trade and energy flows in the Indian Ocean.

They convene strategic thinkers from military, industry, academia and government in Western Australia as the home of Australia’s largest naval base, a growing defence industry, and vibrant civic and academic communities.


Address by US Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland

A Historic Visit:
Secretary Haaland

The Perth USAsia Centre hosted United States Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland for a keynote address on Tuesday, 14 February 2023 at Optus Stadium, overlooking the Derbal Yerrigan on the traditional land of the Whadjuk Noongar people. The event also featured remarks from Caroline Kennedy, US Ambassador to Australia and was attended by key leaders from government, business, academia, and the broader community.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s G7 Address



On 9 June 2021, Prime Minister Scott Morrison delivered a keynote at the Perth USAsia Centre, outlining Australia’s G7 agenda. He emphasised support for open societies, sovereign capacity, global cooperation, and liberal democracy—underscoring the importance of international partnerships and a rules-based order.


In the Zone

Ten Years of Thought Leadership on Indo-Pacific Challenges

Launched by The University of Western Australia in November, 2009, and partnering with the Perth USAsia Centre from 2014, In the Zone was Australia’s premier forum on questions of regional significance.

Covering themes such as food security, space and securing technology futures in the Indo-Pacific, for a decade In the Zone brought businesses and policymakers together in Perth to consider new opportunities emerging in the region.

WA-ASEAN Dialogue

Strengthening Economic Ties Through Connectivity

The WA-ASEAN Trade and Investment Dialogue enables Western Australia’s government and business communities to build stronger relationships with influential Southeast Asian leaders. 

It explores how connectivity can support deeper economic ties between Western Australia and its regional neighbours.
