On Wednesday 2nd July, the Perth USAsia Centre hosted a roundtable discussion on The State of the World: Geopolitical trends to watch in 2025.
Almost six months since the US presidential elections, the international community continues to grapple with the implications of Trump 2.0. Amidst global uncertainty about the reliability of the US as a partner and an intensifying US-China trade war, many countries are increasing defence spending and trying to diversify their economic partnerships. What do these changes mean for our near region, the Indo-Pacific? How will China respond, and what will be the role for major economies like Japan, South Korea and India?
This vital discussion delved into the trends and challenges facing the world in 2025, and the implications for Australia and the Indo-Pacific more broadly.

Guest speaker

Professor Gordon Flake has spent twenty-five years in the US foreign policy community focused on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia and now ten years in Australia’s Indian Ocean capital and is considered an expert on key strategic relationships in the broader Indo-Pacific. He has authored many scholarly and policy studies on security developments in the region, and their policy implications for the US and its regional partners. He is a Governor of the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia (AmCham) and serves on the board of the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. Prior to joining the Centre, he was the Executive Director of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, an Associate Director of the Program on Conflict Resolution at The Atlantic Council of the United States, and Director for Research and Academic Affairs at the Korea Economic Institute of America.
