The Australia-Japan defence industry partnership: site visit to the Australian Marine Complex (AMC)
The Perth USAsia Centre and the Defence, Security and Space Industries Advisory Committee (DSSIAC) of the AJBCC organised a special forum and site visit at the Australian Marine Complex on Tuesday 7 October.
The Australian Marine Complex (AMC) is Australia’s largest integrated marine industrial facility located about 25kms South of Perth and is one of only two naval shipbuilding locations in the country. In addition to the already rapidly expanding pace of shipbuilding on the site, the complex is being transformed to include a secure defence precinct in support of AUKUS. With the selection of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to build Australia’s future frigates on site, the AMC will also play a key role in the Australia-Japan relationship.
The event provided firsthand insights into Western Australia’s defence industry, what the future frigate agreement means for Australia’s defence industry, and how the partnership with Japan will grow. Following remarks from the State Government leaders and an expert panel discussion, there were industry briefings from Austal, the AMC Common User Facility, and Civmec, and site visits.
