Global Good, Global Goods: Envisioning a CAN–AUS Resource Alliance
The Macdonald-Laurier Institute has partnered with the Perth USAsia Centre and the University of Ottawa Critical Minerals Statecraft & Diplomacy project to host the Global Good, Global Goods: Envisioning a CAN–AUS Resource Alliance workshop in Banff, Canada.
Funded through the Canada-Asia Joint Research Grants with support from the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and the Government of Canada, the workshop will bring together policymakers and industry leaders to explore how Canada and Australia can collaborate to strengthen secure and reliable supply chains for critical resources.
As geopolitical tensions rise and global supply chains face disruption, trusted partnerships between liberal democracies are increasingly important. While neither country alone dominates global resource markets, together Canada and Australia could play a significant role in supplying critical minerals, energy and agricultural resources to support resilient democratic supply chains.
The Banff workshop marks the first step in a broader collaboration to generate policy insights, strengthen bilateral cooperation, and explore a practical roadmap for a Canada–Australia resource alliance.

Global Good, Global Goods: Envisioning a CAN-AUS Resource Alliance
In this report by Heather Exner-Pirot, Andrew Pickford, and Wolfgang Alschner, the authors examine how Canada and Australia can strengthen their geopolitical influence by coordinating resource policies and supporting more secure and stable global supply chains. Drawing on their shared political, economic and social values, the report argues that closer collaboration —particularly on critical minerals, trade and environmental standards — could help both countries navigate complex resource governance and reduce exposure to coercion and market volatility.
