Southeast Asia Program

Australia is part of Southeast Asia and has an interest in the security and prosperity of its neighbours. The Perth USAsia Centre seeks to enhance relations and facilitate the development of sound policy towards Southeast Asia.

Australia-Indonesia relations

The Perth USAsia Centre aspires to enrich relations between Australia and its Asian neighbours and our location in Perth makes a program focus on Indonesia essential. Perth’s proximity to Indonesia has fostered a vibrant community of Indonesia-focussed academics, not-for-profits, and business. With Indonesia as an emerging economic powerhouse in the coming years, political and diplomatic leaders often refer to Indonesia as Australia’s most important bilateral relationship in the region.

The Indian Ocean washes on all of our shores. It has been an ocean for over a millennium that has seen trade, exchanges, in goods, trade in cultures, languages, movement of peoples. It has been a remarkable exercise in what we would now call globalization, preceding the term by well over 1,000 years. In many respects the Indian Ocean and the cultures of all of the people and nations that surround it, have made us what we all are today.
