Senator the Hon. Penny Wong, Australia's Shadow Foreign Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, visited the Perth USAsia Centre for a private discussion on Australia's Foreign Policy.
- Senator Wong outlined the alternative Government's policy ambitions within the Foreign Affairs portfolio and highlighted her views on how to advance Australia's national interests. Senator Wong also provided her analysis on Australia's place and national interests in an era of disruption.
- In recent weeks, Senator Wong and her shadow cabinet colleagues have outlined elements of Labor's new approach to engaging Asia, a policy entitled "FutureAsia".
- At our 2 October 2017 In the Zone Conference and reiterated at the roundtable, Senator Wong declared: "We need a step change in our thinking. Not tinkering, not gradualism, but a fundamental whole of government, indeed whole of nation, effort to deepen and broaden our engagement with Asia."
- Policy announcements on FutureAsia include a more focused economic partnership with Indonesia, the utilisation of Australia's diasporia communities abroad, programs to increase Asia capability on Australian boards and independent modelling of the economic impact of future trade agreements.
